About Astro Mauritius
I have always been fascinated by the stars and, above all, the mysteries of the deep cosmos. I still remember being a primary school student, completely captivated by science books that detailed the intricacies of our solar system and the life of stars.
As I grew into my teenage years, my interest evolved into a deep dive through science documentaries. I was driven by an insatiable thirst for understanding, I wanted to know everything, to grasp the "why" behind the universe. I believe that core essence of curiosity is exactly what shaped the man I am today.
One particular night changed my life forever. It was the first time I looked through a telescope, it belonged to my neighbor. Seeing my intense interest in the Moon, he kindly lent it to me. I spent the entire night on the terrace, mesmerized by the craters on the lunar surface. It was an unforgettable moment. (Small confession: I actually broke one of the tripod legs during a clumsy adjustment, making it unusable! But despite that, something new was born inside me that night.)
Shortly after, my mother bought me my very first telescope. It was a basic model with many limitations, but it was mine. I spent more time dreaming while holding it than I did actually observing. The "serious" journey began at 18, when I used my own savings to buy a decent telescope which was a Celestron PowerSeeker 127EQ.
One summer night in my backyard, I pointed that telescope at Jupiter. For the first time, I saw the giant planet, not on a screen or in a book, but with my own eyes. That specific night gave birth to the mission I’m on today, and it is the reason you are reading these words.
The guy behind the telescopes
I am Jordan Joumon, a young Mauritian amateur astronomer and astrophotographer. My goal is to make astronomy an accessible discipline here in Mauritius.
I’ve made this my mission because we are incredibly lucky to live on an island where the Milky Way is still visible to the naked eye. Unfortunately, many in our community aren't yet aware that space is more than just a science, it’s a way of life that reflects in our daily routines, our festivals, and our religious practices without us even realizing it.
I recently took a major step forward by turning this passion into an enterprise. This allows me to invest in high-end equipment to offer the Mauritian people unique experiences, bringing them, quite literally, closer to the stars.
